A survey of friends, colleagues
and acquaintances reveals
what product they simply can’t
live without.
Words by Caroline Selwyn
skin products rate high, but top of the
list is mascara. Popular products include
Maybelline’s iconic Great Lash, Estée
Lauder Double Wear, with Napoleon Perdis,
Chanel and Rimmel also among the favourites.
Whatever the brand, mascara devotees agree that it is an
effective way to bring out your eyes and change the look of
your face.
‘Everyone notices the difference good mascara makes,’
says Isabelle, who can’t live without her Clinique mascara.‘It
can transform anyone into an instant glamour girl.’
A close second were skin finish and start products.
Whether for hiding imperfections or creating the perfect base,
women are hopelessly devoted to concealers, foundations
and powders.
Sara says that her MAC Studio Fix compact foundation
is ‘perfection in disguise’. Also a MAC Studio Fix girl, Eryn
says, ‘I just wear it on its own to even out my complexion
or brush it over my foundation when I’m going out to get a
more matte finish.’
But for many women, the new big thing is the primer.
‘Preparing your skin is the most important part,’ says Cassie.
‘The MAC primer really is amazing. Pop it on five to 10
minutes before your base foundation and you get this great
even look – perfect if you have enlarged pores.’
For Bianca, it’s the classic Clarins Beauty Flash Balm. ‘I
use it to prep my face before makeup. Even if I’m not wearing
makeup, I just use it on its own.’
The next most indispensable product was the GHD hair
straightener.‘It’s amazing what a difference my GHD makes
– not just to my hair but to my overall look,’sa ys Gina.

A recent convert, Kate doesn’t know how she ever
lived without her GHD. ‘It’s not so much for straight hair,”
she says. ‘It just makes my hair look softer, shinier and
definitely healthier.’
Many girls say lip gloss is their number one makeup
item. Sinead never leaves home without her Kit Cosmetics
Only Flirting lip gloss.‘It’s a great shade with high shine, but
it also feels great’. Michelle says lip gloss gives her much-
needed colour. She uses NewYork brand Eddie Funkhouser.
Other favourite glosses included Dior Addict Ultra-Shine
and Yves St Laurent. Sophie’s most indispensable item is
Lucas Papaw Ointment. ‘It’s all about moisture to me,’ she
says. ‘Lip glosses may look and smell nice, but they don’t
moisturise like papaw ointment.’
And then there are the more frivolous choices, the fun
items such as blush, eye shadow and bronzers. Lauren
doesn’t go a day without her beloved L’Oréal Paris True
Match Super Blendable Blush, which she also uses as eye
shadow. Susan’s secret weapon is her MAC bronzer which,
she says, gives her a natural glow. ‘I love the sexy golden-
brown colour it gives me,’ she says. ‘It changes the whole
look of my face.’
For Lola, it’s about her hands, rather than her face.‘I love
my acrylic nails,’ she declares. ‘My real nails are paper thin,
and they make my hands look untidy.’
Laura’s choice is different from all the others.‘No matter
what I’m doing or where I’m going, I can’t live without
perfume,’ she says. ‘It gives me confidence that no other
product can give me.’

Secrets
Cassie says if you want to be really clever, ModelCo
Beauty Fix Face helps stop your makeup from
slipping off your skin.
Brenda’s tip for foolproof eyeliner is to look no
further than Laura Mercier solid powder eyeliner. It
gives a great line that won’t budge and creates the
illusion of thicker lashes.
Gretta says for smoky eyes, all you need is Clinique
No. 110 Plum Seduction Colour Surge Eye Shadow
Quad. The four shades blend beautifully together
and can be worn with numerous colours.
Susan’s summer secret is to apply MAC Bronzer on
the face and neck. This makes your face match the
rest of your body and gives a nice glow that looks
like a real tan.
