Beauty: Makeup Menagerie
Written by Jessica Rule

Whether you're partying it up glam at chic urban soirées or soaking up the full moon on exotic beaches bohemian-style this festive season, match your look to the occasion.

No matter what your plans over the silly season, you'll have started hunting for just the right look to get your party animal game on. Here we visit four of our favourite beauty breeds in their natural habitats - the bombshell, the sex kitten, the rock chick and the boho girl. Now you'll just need to track down the perfect dress, bag and shoes to match before you venture out into the celebratory wilderness in style.

Boho BeautyBoho babe

Simple, natural hair and makeup heralds the true Bohemian beauty. Her glowing face, luxurious leather boots and flowing tunics make this low-maintenance look effortlessly stunning. Boho chic ladies like Isabelle Lucas and Sienna Miller have an understanding that less is more.

‘The ‘Barely There' look is about keeping it monochromatic with natural, beautiful foundation, a hint of blush, a lip tint and perhaps some black pencil in the corners of the eyes for a modern take on day into evening,' says Dale Dorning. ‘Include pralines, musky tones, muted apricots or, for a pop culture reference, a J-Lo nude.'

Minimalism is your best friend in gaining dewy skin. Use a SPF tinted moisturiser over the face, and just enough concealer to hide imperfections. Add a dusting of bronzer and illuminiser over cheekbones and the bridge of your nose for lustre. Natural looking eyes with sands, soft gold and pastel pink shadow and brown or charcoal grey eyeliner offer a low-maintenance air, with lashings of mascara (black, brown, navy or violet). Black eyeliner is only appropriate for night when more dramatic Gypsy eyes add flair. Groomed, but not overplucked, brows can be kept tame with brow gel. Lips call for a nude or subtle pink gloss or tinted lip balm, complemented by a rosy pink cream blush applied to the apples of the cheeks.

The boho goes for beach hair, so if your hair has natural body, define the curls using an enhancer while your hair's still wet. For a wave, there's a plethora of beach hair sprays to get your locks looking ocean-kissed, scrunch hair as it dries.

BombshellBombshell

To spot a bombshell, you only have to watch Hollywood movies from the early 1950s and 60s. She's a drop-dead gorgeous combination of innocence and sex appeal, with immaculate and feminine clothing, hair and makeup.

The bombshell has smooth, glossy hair - preferably with a curl. Channel Greta Garbo and get our your bobby pins to fix a 1930s finger wave in place. Use a curl product to maintain this.

Apply a primer then foundation with a full matte coverage that matches your skin tone to the paler side. You are gearing towards Old Hollywood glamour, so shape your eyebrows to a well-defined arch and fill in sparseness with a brow pencil. Follow Marilyn Monroe's example and keep your brows thick yet well-groomed, or highly manicure them à la Dita Von Teese.

Select a shadow base of white, champagne or soft gold from lash line to brow, then apply a medium shade with a rosy tone from lash to crease. A charcoal shade can be added for a smoky eye effect. Line your lash lines with black liquid eyeliner, gradually thickening the line as you move outwards and winging it out at the ends.

Curl eyelashes and glue a strip or clusters of feathery fine lashes for doe eyes. Rouge the apples of your cheeks with a delicate rose or peach toned powder blush. Blend some highlighter into the tops of your cheekbones and down the bridge of your nose for lustre.

Starlet red lips are a must for this look. ‘Red is a commitment color, but I believe anyone can actually wear it,' says Dale Dorning, international hair and make up artist and CEO of PROOF Cosmetics.

‘For statement lips, I recommend pencil first, then apply lipstick, blot with tissue and re-apply.'
Finish off by dotting on a beauty mark with a dark brown pencil.

Rock chick

The rebel isn't afraid to mix things up and get experimental. Intense, bold, punky and mysterious are the calling cards- think Ruby Rose, Agynes Deyn, Pixie Geldof and Daisy Lowe. It's important to note there's a very fine line between goth and gloomy, plus there are no hard and fast rules for achieving the look. We say accentuate either your eyes or your lips.

Edgy, structured hair is a key component of the look, so get something directional and multifaceted. Use plenty of holding product and your straightening iron to create texture and layers. Kevin Murphy, fashion and editorial hairstylist, likes a cropped cut: ‘Short hair is a break free and a really refreshing look at the moment, but it can be hard to change. Make sure you have lots of length on top otherwise you will paint yourself into a corner. Ask your hairdresser for a ‘long short' - then you have the ability to change fast with the use of a volumising product.'

The look is edgy, so sculpt, shape, define and transform, but soften the blow with a sweep of shimmer over the cheekbones or a splash of colour on the cheeks. Wear a matte foundation and sweep a blush over lightly - while a subdued shade is good for daytime something punched-up makes a statement of an eve. It's all in the radical eyes, so use a liner in black, blue or green and shadows in charcoal, steel, metallic and blue. ‘I like framing the eyes with black kohl pencil, then gently smudging and sealing with a dark shadow,' says Dale Dorning. ‘Work a golden brown shadow into the socket, before blending a darker matte shadow through the socket and under the lash line.'

Finish the look with a self-made manicure in a bold, dark shade. Apply a neutral lip colour if you have done big eyes, otherwise go with something dark - perhaps a bold plum tone - to cap it off.

Sex KittenSex kitten

Seductive French import Brigitte Bardot is the archetypal sex kitten. The blond bed-haired glamourpuss, a film siren with alluring presence in the 50s and 60s, had a signature look that is still emulated by women across the world. Her tousled bedroom hair can be replicated with some volumising products and a teasing comb. ‘The Sex Kitten look would not be complete without the big, voluminous hair - courtesy of expert backcombing at the crown, and side-swept fringe, left effortlessly tousled or pinned into a ponytail at the back,' says Dale Dorning.

Fake tan followed by a shimmering body lotion or powder sets the canvas, but it's all in the eyes for a sex kitten with her signature cat eye look. Don't over-arch your eyebrows, but ensure they're neat and appropriate to your face shape. Fill them in with a brow shadow and brush them. Sweep a neutral eyeshadow on your lids, with a slightly lighter hue under your eyebrow arch to highlight.

To get the cat eye, draw a thick line of black liquid liner from the inside corner sticking close the upper lash line and bringing the eyeliner brush upwards as you extend past the edge of the eye, tapering off with a flick. Use a pencil to line your lower lids.

Glue on false lashes - whether strip lashes or individual - positioned to enhance your cat eye look. Apply mascara to the upper lid to blend your false and real lashes.

Line your lips, close to the outside edge to provide a fuller appearance, with a nude or nude-pink lip liner and apply a corresponding matte lipstick. Bardot often was photographed in matte lipstick, but give your lips more of a pump by applying a dash of gloss for pouty perfection.
