How to wear red lipstick

red lipsBold red lips can dress up any outfit, leaving you feeling sultry and sexy. We tell you how to be the Lady in Red people can't tear their eyes from.

Have you ever tried a red lip and it hasn't quite turned out the way you envisioned? Perhaps you've missed out on a few steps along the way. Follow this safe guide to leave your lips beaming ruby.

Step 1

There are two types of red lipstick, orange-reds and blue-reds. Applying the wrong one with your skin tone can end in disaster. But don't panic, there are some simple rules to follow.

If you have yellow tones to your skin you should opt for an orange-red lipstick, which will compliment your lighter tones. This is also a perfect shade for those with lighter hair, as they can't handle as much colouring as those with dark hair.

If you have darker skin and locks or fall into the pink skin tones category you can handle the bold colour of blue-red lipsticks. The blue undertone in the red doesn't wash your complexion out.

Step 2

We've all seen women with lipstick on their teeth or smudged around their mouth. There are a few tips to applying a red lipstick so you don't become a beauty victim.

Firstly, make sure your lips are conditioned before applying the lipstick. This will stop that lip "cracking" look from occurring.

Your next move is to use a lip pencil. If unexperienced with wearing bold colours this is highly recommended. Line lips with a matching red pencil or even one that matches the natural colour of your lips (if you're using a lip-shade then smudge with a cotton-tip to soften the outline until you can't see it).

Apply the red lipstick, using a lip brush if you're about precision. Start spreading the colour from the centre of the lips, as a little red goes a long way.

By blotting the lips we "stain" the lips and the results last longer. Then simply apply another coat and, presto!

Step 3

Pucker up! Trying a bold lip such as red can take you out of our comfort zone, giving you a newfound confidence, so wear it with style.
