Secret Diary of a Vajazzle Virgin
Written by Gemma Garkut    PDF Print E-mail
vajazzling jewelsVazazzling is the newest beauty craze to hit the salons. But does it live up to the hype? We sent one of our Bellas to find out.

The office has been abuzz with the Vajazzling phenomenon for a while now, so when we heard Sydney beauty therapist Shireen Collett had taken up the trade there was no way that Bella was going to miss out on getting some bling on her thing - it was just a matter of finding a guinea pig. And, as Bella's newest addition, it was no surprise the thing getting blinged would belong to me.

Made famous by Jennifer Love Hewitt, Vajazzling is the bejewelling of the female nether regions after a Brazilian wax using Swarovski crystals. As a frequent flyer to the land of Brazil, I was quite aware of what the first instalment of this treatment would entail but was a tad confused as to why I needed to adorn anything other than my earlobes with such finery.

Reactions from girlfriends and blatant eavesdroppers varied from amazement and excitement to disdain and bewilderment. Representatives of the male opinion were definitely not opposed to the idea (shock horror), while females were more sceptical about the practicalities.

Questions started rising to the surface: What about hygiene? Showering? Going to the toilet? I had nothing to offer them, and the only fruits of my Googling efforts were a combination of pornographic images and J-Love's coy interview with George Lopez on YouTube.

But decorations down there are definitely not a new thing. Piercings, tattoos, waxing... hey, if I'm okay with wearing a diamante-encrusted g-banger under my jeans why not just take out the middleman?

Shireen Collett, owner and managing beauty therapist of Smooth Waxing Studio, is one of the first to offer the treatment in Sydney and has received a fantastic response. My appointment was locked in and the countdown to V-day began. Still unsure as to whether I should tell my boyfriend or let the Vajazzle work it's magic, the only prep I needed to do was leave the region alone.

My Vajazzling began as expected, with the bearable discomfort of the B-wax (which was extremely thorough; Shireen's experience spans 14 years and her reputation in the office definitely did not fall short).

With a layer of tea tree oil post-wax, the crystal design was applied in one go with an adhesive, as if it were a fake tattoo. I looked down, expecting to feel like some kind of freaky present to be unwrapped but was actually pleasantly surprised. The design I chose resembled a sparkly ying/ yang-like symbol but was delicate enough not to feel like I'd run into a Christmas tree.

‘The adhesive is dermatologist-approved and specifically designed to be used after a Brazilian wax, when skin is at its most sensitive,' says Shireen. ‘You can choose from a selection of designs from Swarovski, or design your own - whether it be a word, pattern or someone special's initials. I've had nothing but good reports, from both clients and their partners!'

The verdict? Very impressed. Not only did I get a kick out of my secret bling, it made the view so much nicer to look at. All I need now is a second opinion.
